A dental implant is the most secure solution to tooth loss and a more durable solution than dentures. If you have lost teeth and have tried dentures, but do not enjoy them, we encourage you to try this solution. You will find that implants behave like natural teeth, so after the process is complete, you may even forget which tooth you originally lost. They can be used to replace several teeth or all of your teeth, though if you need a full replacement, we may suggest a hybrid solution. The best way to learn about implants and their many benefits is to schedule a consultation with our dental office. In the meantime, here are a few questions we are regularly asked and our answers to them.
What makes a dental implant so durable?
Osseointegration. The implant itself is made of titanium, which is a very unique metal because the body treats it like natural matter. As a result, the post and bone will fuse together to create a new synthetic root system. By attaching the new tooth (crown) to it, you will have a durable new tooth that is just as secure as a natural one would be. Other solutions address tooth loss from outside the gums, so this is truly the most secure.
Is a dental implant really more convenient?
Yes, it is. Once the process is complete, your implant will behave like your lost tooth. That means you can eat all your favorite foods and engage in high-impact activities, like running, without worrying about the impact on your tooth or teeth. You will never need to worry about your new tooth becoming loose.
What looks more natural – an implant or dentures?
Both can look natural, however, an implant is placed one tooth at a time. This means it will look more natural than a set of dentures would. Both are created in a dental lab after we have taken an impression of your mouth and measurements, so regardless of what solution you select, we will ensure it looks beautiful and natural.
How do you take care of a dental implant?
This is one of the many benefits to this solution. You do not need to take any additional steps to care for your implant. Simply treat it like you would a normal tooth. That means brushing throughout the day and flossing daily. We also want you to visit us for a teeth cleaning twice a year so we can remove built-up plaque and tartar before they can create cavities, infections, or gum disease. While your implant will be resistant to these issues, your other teeth will not, and when you have poor oral health, your entire mouth can be negatively impacted.
Can anyone get implants?
Most people can, but you need to have sufficient bone density for the implant to be secured. If you do not, there are other solutions like smaller implants or a bone grafting procedure that you may want to consider. After examining you and taking x-rays, we can let you know what your options are.
