Make Sure the Men in Your Life Visit the Dentist

DentistIt is a known fact that men tend to avoid going to the dentist and to the doctor.  Guys, in general, tend to put off preventative health care in all forms and having their teeth cleaned is a part of that. The Academy of General Dentistry found that the overwhelming reason was that men didn’t see the need to receive dental care.  This is unfortunately far from the truth, as ongoing dental care is important for several aspects of health.  If you have men in your life that haven’t had their teeth cleaned lately – it is time to schedule their visit and here’s why –

  • Gum disease.  This is a major problem for a lot of Americans, and while it starts with standard gum irritation, swelling and even bleeding, it can lead to gum recession, bone loss and eventual tooth loss.  In order to keep a full set of healthy teeth, gum disease must be prevented, and the best way to do so is with bi-annual teeth cleanings.  These cleanings will also help to prevent infections and cavities.
  • Heart health.  There are links between heart health and gum disease, making prevention that much more important.  Researchers have found that out of everyone treated for a heart condition, seventy percent also had gum disease.  When you combine this with research showing that the same plaque in the heart is found on the teeth – the correlation is clear.  Anything that is in your mouth will eventually be swallowed and disbursed throughout the body.  While the research is ongoing, this indicates that gum disease and a high occurrence of plaque in the mouth may increase the risk of heart disease overall.  By simply visiting the dentist and preventing gum disease, heart health may be improved.
  • Smell. Good breath is important for social interactions since let’s face it – everyone has been around someone with dragon breath.  This can make even a simple conversation incredibly unpleasant, and bad breath is often caused by an infection.  If it has been a while since your husband or son has had their teeth cleaned, they may have an underlying infection that could be leading to bad breath in the first place. This is a sign that it is time for a dental exam.
  • Appearance.  How teeth look can improve a person’s overall appearance.  Studies have found that both men and women view a beautiful smile as the most attractive quality that a person can have.  Further research has found that people with a nice smile have better work performance and can even make more money.  Simply visiting our dentist office for regular teeth cleanings and a teeth whitening treatment can positively impact a person’s life.

If you have men in your life that have been avoiding the dentist chair, help them out by scheduling an appointment.  These are only some of the reasons it is important to have teeth cleaned and to stay in good oral health.  While here, we will ensure that they remain perfectly comfortable and have a pleasant experience.
